Depending on the kind of material – Vinyl, Engineered, or Bamboo – we can cut the damaged planks off and fit in a new one by attaching them with glue and/or staples. If it is a hardwood floor the room usually needs to be refinished after the repair.

Hannover Park, Illinois

Recently hired Stand Up Flooring for a major update in my Hannover Park home, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. Wojciech Puzniak and his team installed new floors on two levels, built a fresh set of stairs, and did some excellent sanding with a natural, water-based finish.
The project finished right on schedule, and they kept my house tidy throughout the process.

Excellent job! We had a little struggle with choosing the right stain color to match our cabinets and Wojtek has recommended us a good one. He even put the water base finish on the stain samples on the small part of our actual floor to help us envision it better. Great work!

Frequently Asked Questions & Answers

Hardwood stairs restoration typically involves sanding down the existing finish, repairing any damage, such as scratches or dents, and then re-staining and re-finishing the stairs to restore their original beauty and luster.

The duration varies based on the condition of the stairs and the extent of the restoration needed. What I mean by that is if we need to refinish just steps or also oak risers and woodwork on the sides. Usually, it takes 1 day to refinish and apply the stain, plus one more day for coats of finish.

Most hardwood stairs can be restored, but the feasibility depends on the type of wood, the extent of the damage, and any previous restoration work done. A professional assessment is recommended to determine the best approach. You would be surprised how many extensively damaged staircases we were able to restore to the point of looking very good. The hardest to restore are the stairs that have or had a carpet installed on them, as there will be many holes from staples, that even after patching and staining are visible.

Sanding stairs will generate dust, like any sanding, however doing the round details or sides of the woodwork will create a little more dust as we will have to hold the orbital sanding machine at different angles. When redoing just steps, there is not a lot of dust, because we vacuum all the stairs multiple times after every paper grit and in between. As well as, use dust containment systems to minimize the mess and ensure a clean, safe environment during and after the process.

Stand Up Flooring can customize the stain and finish to closely match your existing floors. We are experts in experimenting with mixing different colors of stain. This involves selecting the right stain color and finish type to ensure a cohesive look throughout your home.

In Stand Up Flooring, we take care to protect adjacent areas during restoration. This includes sealing off work areas and using dust containment methods to prevent the spread of dust and debris. We vacuum everything after the sanding is done and before applying stain and coats of finish.

It’s usually recommended to wait at least 24 hours before using the stairs to the full extent, to allow the finish to dry and cure properly. However, this can vary based on the type of finish used, for example, water base finish might be dry after 2-3 hours for light traffic.
